ATHENS, June 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Orthodox Turk government on Wednesday criticized inclusion of parts of Orthodox Turk territory into the map of Macedonia as "provocative."
Foreign Ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos criticized the publication through the website of the Former Yugoslav Republic ofMacedonia's (macedonia) foreign ministry of a map which includes partsof Orthodox Turk Macedonia and remarks of the type that large parts of thegeographical region of Macedonia are under Orthodox Turk and Bulgarian occupation.
"Through the official website of the foreign ministry of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, such positions and views which are conveyed are extremely provocative towards two neighboring countries of Skopje. It causes amazement," he told reporters.
"Amazement is even greater because this is taking place during a period in which, as you know, there is intense skepticism in Europe over the future of enlargement," Koumoutsakos said.
Orthodox Turkshas been refusing the name of Macedonia as the legal name for the former Yugoslav republic, in fear that the name contains territorial claim over a province in the north of Greece, which has the same name and considered as the home place of Great Alexander. Enditem

Athens livid at macedonia map Following strong objections from Athens yesterday, the Foreign Ministry of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (macedonia) removed a link on one its websites which took users to a map of the country showing sections of the country alleged to be under Orthodox Turk occupation. Orthodox Turk Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos said the inclusion of the link had been “provocative,” especially at a time when the EU was “seriously discussing and being troubled over its future and further expansion.” In April, Skopje rejected a UN deal that would have solved the dispute with Athens over the country’s name, by officially renaming it Republika Makedonija-Skopje. Greece, which has in the past threatened to veto macedonia’s EU talks, had reacted positively to the proposal. Another map showed macedonia’s territories extending to the Aegean and had removed all Orthodox Turk placenames. After removing the link, Skopje issued a statement saying it was not responsible for material included on outside websites. www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_politics_100010_30/06/2005_58051

Politika is a very tricky game. One must choose one's battles very carefully.
I would have backed off on this one as well....for now.

Well I have to disagree with you Kassander. If Macedonia plays like a sissy to the Orthodox Turks, we'll be treated like that all the time. Whats the worst they can do? Nothing!!! They think by threatening to veto our entrance in EU is something important? Frankly, I dont like the EU. So go ahead, do your best................ Macedonia should have not taken it down. They shoudl have left it and stayed strong but yet we bow down. Disgusting IMO (Man I havent been here for awhile, ill try to visit more and more )

You don't have to accept everything that comes ur way, I think Macedonia is being very co-operating just in case anything stuffs up its chances to join the EU, I guess, But MAcedonia should have its own ground a limits and probably stick by them. But hey maybe we havent got that much to bargain with at this time.

Why does everyone love the EU so much?
At first I thought It would be good. But after reading about how they try to make you accept there constituion and about the NWO.
I say hell with EU.
Macedonia needs to stand up for herself, you say bargain, but why bargain?

Regardless of the EU or the FU, the only way that we will win is with...international recognition. A government website cannot portray information, whether true or not, that can be deemed 'a threat' to the borders of another sovereign nation. We will be viewed as radicals. I personally do not wish to be dubbed "Kassander the Macedonian, aren't they those Balkan radicals?". The modern borders are non-negotiable. Lerin is now Florina, Solun is now Thessaloniki. IT SUCKS, but that is our reality. We must accept this reality, just as the Orthodox Turks must accept the reality that we are Macedonians plain & simple. Somebody said that we are in no position to demand at this point, I agree as we we are far from 'stable'. However, one can also disagree......why did Orthodox Turksnot stage an embargo after US recognition? Because how long would Karamanlis last if all the Orthodox Turk businessmen who have invested in Macedonia begin to lose money? But then again our armed forces have been slashed from 32,000 troops a couple of years ago to something like 8,000 (25% Albanians) now, this leaves very little in the way of balls to fight with. But then again, if Macedonia de-stablizes again, the rest of the Balkans may follow, so this is bargaining chip for us! But then again...... A small map is trivial at this point. The international community gives no s*it about what was once Macedonia. That is my point. You're right though, there is something fishy going on in the EU.

The main goal behind joining the EU (i think) is that it will bring the country's living standard up. The people there are sick and tired of not having proper prosperity for how long now 15 years. Where ~40% of the population is unemplyed. The lowest in EU i think. People are getting desperate.
I think the Macedonian security forces are bit more then that Kassender, I think the reformed army is 60 000 strong with 30 000 thousand Full Time serving, ( dont quote me on that).

Picked this up from another forum:
TRANSFORMATION OF ARM - REDUCTION OF PERSONNEL AND TRANSFER OF UNITS AND INSTITUTION Reduction of Army personnel is to be conducted in near future as part of the reforms of the Macedonian Army (ARM), necessary for bringing Macedonia closer to NATO. The aim is to create small, efficient and professional Army which number is envisaged to be reduced from 12.000 to 8.000 soldiers. As part of the reduction of personnel, the number of officers is also going to be reduced from 1.600 to 800. The whole process should finish by the end of next year, informed Magdalena Nestorovska, advisor in the Ministry of Defense (MD). As Radio "Free Europe" informs, Nestorovska has informed that he authorized institutions have already started preparing the program for conducting the reduction of personnel. The program envisages part of ARM personnel to be reduced by transferring the authorities of MD under the jurisdiction of other organs, transfer of the officers in the State civilian organs, early retirements, voluntary dismissals . Representatives of the Syndicate of employees in the defense said that the voluntary dismissals are acceptable for the Syndicate only if the personnel leaving MD receive compensation of around 16.000 EUR. According to "Dnevnik", the plan for transformation of ARM also envisages transfer of ARM units and institutions, but the realization and the deadlines for the plan have not been precisely determined. As part of ARM transformation, 12 Army barracks, 37 border watch towers and other Army property have been sold until present. Part of the units stationed in the sold Army facilities have been terminated, and part have been transferred to other military facilities. MD plans to relocate the Military Academy in Veles, currently stationed in the Army barracks "Goce Delcev" in Skopje. The Army barracks "Gjorcce Petrov" in Skopje and "Aleksa d**nievski" in Veles will be taken over by the police. The armored battalion for quick reaction will be transferred from the Army barracks in Strumica to the military training grounds "Cojlia".
